La Réforme élimine tout art religieux. Le XVIè est une période de recherche qui prépare l'art d'Inigo Jones au XVIIIè.

L'influence française y domine, suivie par celle des Allemands et Flamands qui vont acclimater avec lourdeur le style italien : château de Longleat (Symétrie absolue), Wollaton Hall, Notts, Kirby (Franco-tudor), Wimbledon (détruit), Montacute (plan en H) sont les oeuvres majeurs de l'abondante production du règne.
