2.1. Introduction
La tentative de Dioclétien cherchant à étouffer le christianisme échoue en 311 et 313 avec l'accord de Constantin et Licinius (Édit de Milan). Constantin, victorieux de Licinius, fonde sa capitale à Byzance. Le concile de Nicée fait du Christianisme une religion d'état (325) et la lutte contre le paganisme commence. Malgré l’intermède de Julien l'Apostat (361-363) les temples païens sont fermés (Édit de Théodose, 391). En 389, le Sérapeum d'Alexandrie détruit.
